Spelling

Although we do not send lists of spellings home at Marlborough, some children may benefit from extra practise.  Many children still find it tricky to spell many of the high and medium frequency words.  We will do lots of spelling activities at school, the following are some ideas if you wanted to support this learning at home.

It should be fun! No arguments about homework please: life is stressful enough!

It is best to practise spellings in joined handwriting – this helps the brain to learn letter patterns.

This website has lots of word lists and games for high and medium frequency words:

Ideas for home learning:

  1. Rainbow writing: Write your spelling words in pencil and then use two or three different coloured crayons to trace over the words.
  2. Pyramid Writing: Write the first letter of your word, then on the next line, write the first two letters of your word. Continue doing this until you have the word spelled.
  3. Red Vowels: Write your words in pencil. Then trace over the vowels with a red pencil, pen or crayon.
  4. Salt/rice/sand writing: pour some salt/rice/sand onto a tray and write your words with your finger.
  5. Glue It Writing: cut out letters from newspapers, magazines or make different kinds on the computer. Glue them to paper to write your spelling words.
  6. Tongue Twisters: write a tongue twister using your words. Underline the spelling word. E.g. Wally went walking in Wimbledon.
  7. Make your words from playdoh/plasticine/blu-tack/pastry (then you can ‘eat your words’!).
  8. Paint your words BIG using a large paintbrush with water on a wall outside.
  9. Trace your word onto someone’s back/get someone to trace it onto yours.
  10. Look/cover/write/check: look at the word/cover the word/write the word/check the word. How many can you write in 1 minute? Try to better your score.

This is a list of words that should be learnt during years 3 and 4… how many can you spell?
