This Week’s Maths

I will post details of our current maths learning here, together with any activities you might like to practise at home.

20th June

For the next couple of weeks we will be looking at multiplication and division.  We will be practising using a grid to multiply a 2 digit number by a single digit number (info for parents here: http://www.theschoolrun.com/what-is-the-grid-method).  We will be dividing using a number line.  As always we will be practising our 3, 4 and 8 times tables.

We will also be doing some data handling: pictograms and bar charts (and practising using a ruler to draw a straight line!).

6th June

This week we are revisiting column addition before moving on to subtraction.

16th May

This week and next we are revisiting fractions (following on from last week’s division). I will be introducing tenths and we will be working on adding fractions with the same denominator (e.g. 2 tenths and 4 tenths). We will also be comparing fractions.

Remember that your children can play Sumdog at home: every little helps!

9th May

This week we will continue working with multiplication and division within the 3, 4, and 8 times tables (and revising 2s, 5s and 10s).  We will be looking at the relationship between multiplication and division and using the facts we know to work out unknown facts, e.g. if we know 3×4=12 we also know 4×3=12, 12 divided by 3 is 4 and 12 divided by 4 is 3.

Children often struggle with the concept of division and the language involved can be confusing, so any chances you get to contextualise it would be helpful.  Keep it real!

18th April

This week I am introducing perimeter to year 3.  We measured the perimeter of the playground last week so I will be talking more about that and the children will be measuring the perimeter of some simple shapes.

We will also be revisiting place value – ordering 3 digit numbers and word problems involving place value.

Times tables etc. will be ticking over as usual.

The maths curriculum now includes spelling of numbers so we will be practising this in our handwriting sessions.

There are also a number of children who are still writing their numbers back to front – I’m clamping down this term, so some children will be doing daily activities to try to correct this.

Thank you – feel free to practise any of this at home!

7th March

Wow! Your children were brilliant at column addition: get them to show you what they have learnt.

I am looking forward to (at least) a week of teaching time – always an interesting one!  We will be revising Roman numerals to 12,  working on timelines and durations of time (how long do different things take during the day?) and working towards telling the time to the nearest minute on an analogue and digital (12 hour) clock.  As always, anything you can do at home will be welcome. There is a game here you might want to play with your child:

Also lots of interactive time games here:

Thank you.

February 22nd

I hope you’ve had a restful half term.  For the next couple of weeks we will be concentrating on addition and subtraction (but still keeping those times tables ticking over!).  We will be

  • mentally adding and subtracting a single digit number to 2 and 3 digit numbers (e.g. 234 + 8; 124-5),
  • mentally adding/subtracting multiples of 10 and 100 to 2 and 3 digit numbers (e.g. 234 + 30, 342 – 100)
  • beginning to use formal written methods for addition and subtraction
  • looking at some word problems involving addition and subtraction.

There are some fun interactive games you could play at home here:

I haven’t sent a game home for a while – so keep your eyes peeled this week!

Thank you.

February 8th

This week we will be looking at money: adding amounts and giving change. You can help at home by giving your child a handful of coins to add up/playing shops. Children see us paying with plastic so handling cash and talking about money will help.

February 1st

We are continuing our work on fractions – looking at tenths, ordering fractions on a number line and looking at equivalent fractions and fractions of amounts.

We will also be working on our 3 times table.

January 18th 2016

This week we are beginning a block of work on fractions.

We will start with lots of practical activities to consolidate and develop understanding.

This will develop into finding fractions of amounts, looking at equivalent fractions and adding fractions with the same denominator.

You can help at home by discussing fractions in ‘real-life’ situations (pizza for tea one day? Discussing quarter of an hour, half an hour, etc.).  Please also continue with basic number facts: times tables, number bonds, etc. as we also need to keep these ticking over daily.

Thank you.

January 11th

This week we are having a little blast of place value.

  • revising the value of each digit in a 3 digit number, i.e. knowing that the 4 in 245 is worth 40;
  • making different target numbers with 3 different number cards, e.g. what is the largest number you can make with a 2, a 6 and an 8? What’s the nearest number to 500 that you can make? The smallest number? etc
  • revision of the > greater than and < less than signs;
  • solving number problems involving place value.

The children may come home with a game later this week – so please ask them! Details here: http://nrich.maths.org/10945

Thank you.
